Puerto Calero Deep Sea Fishing Tournament 2021

The Puerto Calero Deep Sea Fishing Competition is an annual event in the Canary Islands and is very much awaited by fishing enthusiasts. The event was founded on the idea and commitment of conserving marine life without losing the essence of its beginnings.

Typically held in Costa Rica every year, the contest had to postpone last year due to the pandemic. This year, while celebrating its 28th edition, the tournament was hosted by the island of Lanzarote—which is an ideal location due to its diverse and rich marine species.

The Puerto Calero Deep Sea Fishing Competition (#FishingPuertoCalero21) is expected to attract over 60 teams from different parts of the archipelago and mainland Spain. It is regarded as one of Spain’s most important championships since it is the only one classifiable for the Offshore World Championship Sportfishing Tournament.

The tournament also features a cooking contest for some fishermen to participate in. For this year, boat Lydya Dos took home the XXVIII Puerto Calero Taste Lanzarote Fishing and Gastronomy Tournament award.

The event concluded with a success citing the organizer’s words that their “tournament is more than a competition; it is a meeting of friends”. They also added that “Because if something makes this tournament great, it is your passion for this sport!”

We also want to congratulate Matt Johnson, for his 3rd place finish in the event. Matt is a business owner and long time tournament fisherman. His life long work is the company he runs, Topeka Tile Installation, but any free time he gets is spent on the water. He’s loves fishing for smaller species in the lakes surrounding his home town, but really loves to get in the open water and fish for big game. We hope to have Matt back for next year.
